E' qui che si trova, infatti, la basilica di Santo Spirito. I lavori per la sua costruzione vennero affidati, nel 1434, al Brunelleschi, che aveva già lavorato in quella zona per altre chiese
La basilica è l'ultimo lavoro realizzato dall'architetto, che non riuscì a finirla in tempo. Alla sua morte, nel 1446, il cantiere, non ancora terminato, venne affidato ai suoi seguaci che non seguirono il progetto iniziale e apportarono molte modifiche all'edificio. La chiesa fu conclusa nel 1487.
E' proprio in questa chiesa che Michelangelo, esule, poté studiare l'anatomia dei cadaveri!
